I wonder if this effect would be somewhat counteracted if a diet product was ingested in conjunction with "real" food. Such as a diet coke WITH a meal. You are getting calories, and maybe even some simple carbs with your meal, so the brain is not completely unsatisfied? (I have no idea if it works that way, but it seems like it *might*.)

I suspect not so much. Sugars (and artificial sweetners) affect different receptors in the brain than fats and savory foods. You can't fool the brain that way. And there is more than one type of feedback mechanism for the brain and body to check in and determine what is *really* going on.

Interesting! I have found that aspartame drinks (most of them) actually cause my body to think that it's hungry. It mimics hunger pangs, which, of course, makes you want to eat. I always assumed that's why the diet drinks never work. Good to know about this.
