The origins of Star Wars
Nov. 26th, 2003 12:56 amI just watched a great movie. It is an older Akira Kurasawa film called The Hidden Fortress. It is black and white with subtitles. The cinematography is excellent, and the characters are amazing. The DVD has an interview with George Lucas (I'm sure you were wondering about the Star Wars reference). He talked about seeing the movie and about its influence on the development of Star Wars. If you watch it, you will definitely recognize some of the characters.
Several things impressed me about the movie. The characters, including the female characters, are strong. The movie is story driven, though there is plenty of action. The cinematography has that distinctive Kurasawa look, and also the realism that gives the movie more tension.
The movie has a number of themes and I think they are expressed better than in many of Shakespeare's plays.
I highly recommend this movie. Check it out. I got it from Netflix, but I am planning on buying it when I geta chance.
