We jusy got back from seeing Frank Miller's Sin City. And I am quite impressed. I don't think a movie has so impressed me in a while, and especially on so many levels. That part really surprised me. While I had expected the visual impact to be interesting, and had heard that it did keep the feel of Frank Miller's original comic books, this had all that and more. The acting, the music and soundtrack, the storyline, combined with the amazing visual effects and the inherently graphic nature of the stories to make it something special. While each element on its own might be gratuitious, or over-the-top, when combined, they work together to create a genre where they each have a place and make that world work. Its powerful story and color, of honestly and brutality, duty and license, make the good and bad, right and wrong fit perfectly into the strange contracting landscape.

The series of stories are well thought out and are at least partly related. The characters are well done, with interesting quirks, motivations, and depths.

Oh, and I want to visit Old Town sometime. You will too once you have seen the movie....

You think? It was definitely a very well-crafted movie and visually stunning, but I couldn't get past how male-centered it was for long enough to actually enjoy it. Of course, you could argue that that's just part of the genre.

I definitely think that was part of the genre. I also think that when you get Frank Miller and Quentin Tarantino as Directors, there is going to be a strong tendency toward the macho. It would have been very different if it had been directed by someone else, but it would not have been the type of story Frank Miller was trying to tell in the comics either.

An "art" film.

As we left the theater, my partner of 5 years turns to me and says in his best deadpan: "An interesting art film, don't you think?"

I couldn't surpress the laugh.

NOW... Let's hope no jerk in gollywood has the stupidity to try a SEQUEL! [Well... Maybe. If Miller is at the helm again, but only then.]
